Cyber Crime

INTRODUCTION

Cyber Crime (aka computer crime) is defined as crimes committed on the internet using the computer as either a tool or a targeted victim.

Why learn about it?

Nowadays, internet is accessible to almost everyone. People do not only use it to surf web but also use it for online transactions involving money.

2 types of Cyber Crimes

Type 1
Spam - continuously sending of packets to the destination over the internet

One example of spam is Denial of Service

What is Denial of Service (aka DoS)?
Denial of Service attack is to prevent client from getting a service from a server.

Examples are:
  1. Attempts to "flood" a network, thereby preventing legitimate network traffic
  2. Attempts to disrupt connections between two machines, thereby preventing access to a service
  3. Attempts to prevent a particular individual from accessing a service
  4. Attempts to disrupt service to a specific system or person

Does anyone know that Yahoo had been one of the victims of Denial of Service?

Yahoo had been down for more than 3 hours on 7th Feb 2000 due to Denial of Service. People were unable to use all the services provide by Yahoo during this duration. This had caused a lot of inconvenient to the people.

More information on the Yahoo Attack

Can you imagine if all major servers are down, what will happen to us since most of us relay badly on internet nowadays?
But for now the Denial of Service had been solved if not you will still unable to surf Yahoo.

Type 2
Computer Fraud - deceive, misrepresent, destroy, steal information, or cause harm to others by accessing information through deceptive and illegal means over the internet

One example of Computer Fraud

SAN JOSE WOMAN CHARGED WITH FRAUD IN CONNECTION WITH A PROTECTED COMPUTER

Ms. Leatiota was an employee of a company that provides payroll processing services to clients both in and outside of California. Green Waste Recovery was a client of Ms. Leatiota's company. Ms.Leatiota allegedly obtained and used the user names and passwords of other company employees without their knowledge or permission to access her company's computer network to alter the Green Waste payroll records so that Green Waste overpaid her husband, a Green Waste employee.

More information on the incident

I feel that it is a serious issue as money was involved. Nowadays, people tend to do payment online and online banking. If the network had been compromised, it will cause people to suffer loss of money or others confidential data online.

Some Tips :
  1. Practice safe online shopping. Know your sellers and use only secure sites.
  2. Use secure transactions when transferring sensitive information and make sure you are dealing with a reputable company.
  3. Choose strong passwords and keep them safe.
  4. Make sure to verify the authenticity of an attachment before you open it. More information on keeping your computer free of malware and unwanted software:
  5. Never send your personal information (credit card numbers, passwords, etc.) in an email.
Overall, I feel that new media is still not a safe place for people to do payment or banking. It is because there is always a new way of compromised the network when the old one are solved. For the spamming case, I think that we should try not depend too much on server services as we would not know when it will happen again(example email server).

  1. Whether we like it or not, cyber crime is more often than not, inevitable. The only thing we can do to be more prudent on such a matter is to exercise care and responsibility when ever we are using the web. Be careful of who we are giving out our personal particulars to.

  2. With e-commerce and online transactions becoming more popular, do you think cyber crime will also become more common?

You provide some links to the texts, materials you read. However, do cite sources clearly.

  3. Any personal encounters to share?

Your link shows US stats - do you have any local ones?

  4. I agree with amanda that cyber crime is inevitable. Criminals and culprits, like everyone else, progress together with technology. Thus answering newmediascapes question, yes cyber crime will become a very widespread. Afterall, with intended avoidance, it is even more difficult to track down the culprits.

I feel that the denial of service is something that cripples the world's progress. Due to an individual's irresponsible actions, many processes worldwide have to be delayed. However, we are unable to stop culprits from progessing with technology because:

    1. we cannot tell who are culprits until they have some misdeeds, which would be too late.
    2. internet access is widely available.

Hence it is so difficult to pre-empt these crimes.

  5. I didnt know that just by spamming(sending large packets) can cause server to breakdown.
Cyber crime is a very serious issue.
For spamming, it can lead to disaster such as cant access to important/emergency documentations.

  6. wow, i didn't know that online banking is not that save yet, even though they implement using of a special card as security. Best thing to do now is to watch out when doing internet transaction(involves money).

  7. When doing online banking or payment, some people will think if the payment is successful anot. When surfing the website, one will have queries whether the payment is done here or other pages, that why more older generation people prefer go to the bank and companies to do payment.

  8. For online payments, we have to exercise caution. Checking if the site uses a secure connection for payments and etc must be made a habit.

Someone usually becomes a victim due to negligence or ignorance.

  9. After reading your blog, i think i will use less online payments in the future. It makes me feeling unsafe to use it.

Cyber crime is not very clearly defined in laws, but somedays, those people doing cyber crime will be punished.

  10. I agree with wanzihao, that online shopping is quite dangerous if we do not practice safe online shopping techniques.Through your post, I've "learned" some new things in this post.

  11. To newmediascapes, I have not any personal encounter as I do not make any online payment or banking. I think that cyber crime will be more common. As those "criminals" will want to test their skill and feel the achievement. Since more and more people using new media, people affected will be larger. This make them more satisfy.

Beside that Singapore has created new law enforcement agencies with specially trained personnel to keep pace with the rapid advances in technology and the resulting proliferation of computer-based crimes. 13. Even though the new media is a very convenient way to carry out transactions, i personally still have second thoughts when i have to pay for my stuff online.

  14. Good infomation on topic.
Agree with EEeeeee banking still not providing 100% sufficient assurance. But using PAYPAL doesn't hurts too. As long those e-commerce involving money dealing online transactions provides top-class services with excerptions to the quality of security features, we're still safe in the nutshell of those trusted policies. Just be Red Alert at all times.

I could not imagine what if all the major servers were down. Many busineses, students, teachers depend on sites like Yahoo and Google. I would personally find it irritating as searching for information over the internet which is supposed to be quick and easy have to be delayed due to irresponsible action of some users.

  16. I personally don't use much of e-banking or any form of transaction over the internet. It is because I am old fashioned, in that I don't fully trust sending transactions over the internet. Somehow the "unphysicalness" of transacting money throught the internet made me uneasy. Based on your post, I guess my doubts are justified.

Interesting post. Like Khairul, I have never realised that spamming can cause even major servers, like Yahoo!, to breakdown so easily.

Internet fraud and scams is becoming a major threat to internet users like me and you alike. However, I feel that with the advancement in technology, someone or a company should come up with a programme or software that is fraud or scam proof. That would definitely make my life much easier.
